What is the surf like in Summer?
The North West of Ireland has very consistent surf. Most days you can find ridable waves on one of our many reef or beach breaks. Generally summer surf ranges from 2-4ft mostly on beach breaks but semi-regular reef break swells in excess of 4ft will occur.
Recommended boards for summer use: Small wave boards i.e. thrusters ranging from 6'0" to 6'4", fat boy flyers, retros, fishes, quads, mini-mals, longboards and SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards).
-
What is the surf like in Winter?
Winter time produces much bigger and heavier swells. It's the time of year that Ireland is famous for as all it's world class reef breaks come to life. A typical winter swell would be 5-8ft with regular big swells hitting the coast ranging anything up to 20-30ft. If you are a beginner or intermediate surfer, don't worry, the North West still offers some beach break action from it's more sheltered beaches like Streedagh and Rossnowlagh.
Recommended boards for winter use: Depending on your skill level, we would advise getting a slightly longer, heavier glassed, more durable board for the winter i.e. thrusters ranging from 6'6" to 7'0" and fat boy flyers/retro boards in the 6'8" to 7'2" range.
