Having started surfing a few years ago (relatively late at the ripe old age of 32!), and having attempted to learn on my own for a year or more, I am fortunate enough to have availed of the coaching services of Richie Fitzgerald.
Even before hitting the water, Richie's help and advice with wetsuit and board selection was of great benefit.
The surfing lessons, which Richie approached in a very professional manner, were typically split into the following sections - an initial discussion; beach drills; me surfing with Richie observing; a mid-session discussion and breakdown; and finally Richie joining me in the water to coach further. And after all that, Richie produced a very useful document within a few days which summarised the sessions, plus offered some tips and improvement techniques to work on.
With Richie's help, I've improved my knowledge of waves, paddling and duck-diving, wave selection, timing, take-off, and stance - all this has helped move me to an intermediate level of surfing in a short time.
Richie is a down-to-earth character who will make you at feel at ease straight away, is always encouraging, always looking to the positive, constructive in his criticisms (but never condescending) and in addition to this, he is methodical and professional in his approach.
And at the end of the day, Richie's love of the ocean ensures that every surf session is, above all, enjoyable and fun.
For anyone thinking of getting intermediate or advanced level surfing lessons, I would have no hesitation recommending Richie as your surf coach.
