Established in 1990, Surfworld Bundoran has grown from a small, family-run surf shop into one of Ireland’s most recognised names in core surfing retail and surf education. Founded by the Fitzgerald family, the shop began modestly on Main Street in the heart of Bundoran — a coastal town that would soon become widely known as the surf capital of Ireland.

In its earliest days, Surfworld focused on the essentials: surf wax, leashes, and basic equipment for a tight-knit local surfing community. At the time, Ireland’s surf scene was still developing, and Bundoran was emerging as a serious destination thanks to its powerful Atlantic swells and world-class reef breaks. As the popularity of surfing in the region grew throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, so too did Surfworld.

Responding to the needs of both local surfers and visiting wave-seekers, the shop steadily expanded its range. What began as a small outlet for core accessories evolved into a comprehensive surf retailer, offering a wide selection of surfboards, wetsuits, hardware, apparel, and accessories. The business built a reputation for knowledgeable advice, quality products, and genuine customer service rooted in lived surfing experience.

Beyond retail, Surfworld became deeply embedded in the local surf culture. The introduction of board and wetsuit hire made the sport more accessible to newcomers, while a thriving second-hand board market supported the grassroots community. Recognising the growing interest from tourists and beginners, Surfworld also established a surf school, providing structured lessons and safe instruction to surfers of all levels. This further cemented its role not just as a shop, but as a gateway to the waves.

Over more than three decades, Surfworld Bundoran has remained proudly independent and family-owned. The business is still run today by Richie and Briohny Fitzgerald whose involvement continues to shape its direction and uphold its strong community values. While the scale of operations has grown, the ethos has stayed the same: authentic, community-driven and committed to supporting surfing in Bundoran. The shop’s journey mirrors the town’s transformation from a traditional seaside resort into an internationally recognised surf destination.

Today, Surfworld stands as both a cornerstone of Bundoran’s surf industry and a testament to what can be built through passion, dedication and deep local roots.
